Yesterday, I looked at my yard, leaf-cluttered and a bit dejected. Flowers had bloomed, pumpkins had sat, now things needed to be readied for a new season. The summer things had earned a well-deserved snooze in garage and storage building. So, I set to work. When I’d finished, lawn ornaments were stashed, empty flower pots stored away, small fence in the back taken down. The most important chore was filling five bird feeders with sunflower seeds. Then, I sat down on the deck to rest.
The birds must have been hiding in trees and behind leaves, just waiting for those feeders to fill because no sooner had I sat than a tiny black-capped chickadee came for a sunflower seed. Then, another came. A titmouse, a female cardinal, and a stranger who was dark gray, small, and hungry. As I rested, these birds presented an afternoon’s entertainment. Blue sky, orange and brown leaves, tufts of feathered friends–what could be better. This was yesterday. Today, I know that change is coming in the form of wintry weather. That will be tomorrow.
