Words Get In the Way

Words Get In the Way

As I opened the back door this morning, a blast of frigid wind struck me. I didn’t expect that. Then, looking at the local forecast, I see we are under another wintry warning. Freezing drizzle is a possibility. Freezing drizzle wasn’t mentioned in last night’s forecast was it? Or did I miss hearing those words? I sip my Folgers, grateful for its warmth, for shelter and food, and for words of warning from the weather bureau.

Snatches of an old song keep running through my head this morning. I don’t remember its title nor even much of the actual song except, “Words got in the way.” Sometimes those pesky things can get us in trouble; they can break our hearts or lift us to the highest heights. I read this morning that some place in California wants to prosecute people who do not agree with global warming. In other words, people had better not speak words of dissent. They’d better agree, for goodness sake! Forget about freedom of speech. Words had better fit the narrative. Have you read George Orwell’s 1984?

Words! As I write the fourth Darcy and Flora cozy mystery, words are all I have to convey my thoughts to you, the reader. Sometimes I search and search for just the right word and there doesn’t seem to be one. But I keep trying.Cozy_boxedSet_cover_Web

Words can lull us into complacency; they can inspire, embolden, provoke, sway. And, in the case of cozy mysteries, they can whisk us away to a place and to friends we would like to visit. Words! May we use them wisely and may they never get in the way of truth.
