When the Wind Chill Is Way, Way Down

When the Wind Chill Is Way, Way Down

I don’t know what other thermometers read this morning, but mine is down to -1 degree with a wind chill of -15 degrees. The sun is shining, so the cold is deceptive. It is not snowy or sleeety, just a deadly serious frigid temperature. I’ve  put out the first seeds and water of the morning for the birds (and squirrels). It is nearly impossible to keep water for them because it freezes so quickly.

This is not a cold snap, but a long-lasting cold spell. It is truly winter! I hope everyone and everything has a safe, warm place to be.

Coffee is always good but especially on mornings like these. Nemo, who doesn’t drink coffee, has been out to bark at the birds, then inside for food and a chewy bone. That was so exhausting, he is, once again, snoozing.

I remember when I was a child, Dad getting up on winters’ mornings, starting a fire in the wood-burning stove. I remember the sound of sticks of wood chunking into the fire-box and the fragrance of wood smoke. I would stay in bed as long as I could, hoping for the house to get warm before getting up to start the day.

But, this is January, not June, and weather is weather. I’m glad for the four seasons and I’m glad that God is in charge; not I. The cold of winter makes me appreciate the warmth of summer. In hot weather, a little wind chill would be appreciated! But, this morning, it chills the bones.
