Today is Groundhog Day. The big question is: will he see his shadow? If the groundhog wakes up, pokes his head above the ground, and sees his shadow, he is so frightened that he disappears into his den again and we have six more weeks of winter. So goes the old belief which probably nobody believes but it’s fun to pretend.
Groundhogs have several names, including whistle pig. The groundhog whistles for any number of reasons, among them to attract a mate. Actually, that’s probably what he comes out of his burrow to find. I’m not sure why he feels she wouldn’t be out and about in the sunshine, but I guess groundhogs prefer the darkness of their underground home and if he sees his shadow, he’s so startled, he decides to go back to sleep and try again in six weeks.
February 2 is celebrated as Groundhog Day in several states and countries. I think it’s just a reason to get together and rejoice that winter is nearly over. No matter if he sees his shadow or not, in a couple of months, we’ll truly have reason to celebrate because warm weather will, one day, be here again.
Word is out that we will have an early Spring! Hope it’s true!
Hmmm. That would be nice.
I am celebrating this February day with breakfast on the deck! Truly glorious out.
That’s a very nice way to celebrate Groundhog Day, Kimberly.
That’s a great way to celebrate, Kimberly.
