Unexpected things happen. As long as they are nice, pleasant or intriguing unexpected things, I like them fine. In cozy mysteries, when unexpected things happen, they usually are not so nice. Now, what a thing to do to Ned or Darcy or Flora! It’s good they are only fictional.
When I wrote Moonlight Can Be Murder, I tied up the main mystery and you the reader knew the outcome. But, I purposely left some dangling threads. I’m picking up those threads in writing the sequel, Fright of the Silvery Moon. Here’s one of those intriguing things in the first book that may have a bearing on the second. Will it trigger an event that is unexpected and pleasant? Well, this is a mystery, you know.
From Moonlight Can Be Murder, page 66:
The last item was a small, brown leather box. I lifted the lid and gasped at the beautiful object nestled inside. Overhead lighting in the cubicle danced off a locket set with jewels and attached to a silver chain. The locket had a soft, almost rose tint to it and a glow that seemed to come from within as much as from the artificial lighting. Reverently, I lifted the gorgeous piece of jewelry from its velvet nest.
The locket itself was perhaps a little more than an inch in diameter. A large ruby adorned the center, surrounded by alternating diamonds and emeralds. My hands shook as I pushed the clasp. The locket sprang open revealing a picture of a young, smiling man. His hair was dark and his eyes, as they looked at the camera, held a twinkle. I had seen this man many times as a child. Uncle Javin smiled up at me. The other side of the locket, the side which should have held the picture of Javin’s sweetheart or wife, was empty.
I think you could say that Javin’s life held its share of mystery and misery. But, he was a sympathetic character and it would have been nice to get know him better, don’t you think? ————————————————————————————————————————– Come Visit: https://www.pinterest.com/blanchemanos
