What is there about the way a lot of people use cell phones that reminds me of the children’s story, Pinnochio? Well, let’s see now. Everywhere I go, whether I’m driving or shopping, I see people with phones stuck to their ears or, worse yet, texting. Wrecks happen, someone bumps into someone else or steps in front of traffic because he or she really isn’t paying attention. The talker’s mind is on the conversation coming into his brain through the miracle of technology.
In the children’s story Pinocchio, the boys didn’t know they were being led astray, until it was too late and they were changed into donkeys. Do you remember? As well as teaching the value of telling the truth, the story taught the consequence of not thinking for themselves.
Cell phones are good and technology is wonderful, but not at the expense of wrecks, injuries, and lost lives. Children’s stories taught a valuable truth and it’s important that as grown-ups, we remember. Wake up, America! Take the phone out of your ear and see what’s happening around us.
I never knew the entire story about Pinocchio. I just knew it got a long nose from lying. I agree that cell phones are a menace at times. Amazing how I see adults, even kids walking down the street all the time looking at their cell phones. I carry mine with when I walk Buster, and am guilty about pulling it out to take pictures of plants, decorations and other items of interest. I don’t keep it glued to my ear, since that would be too distracting and dangerous when walking my dog.
They are fascinating and can do about anything. But, I think face to face conversations can’t be beat.
