Okay, we’ve had blackberry winter, whippoorwill winter and now is this ‘possum winter? It is 45 degrees this morning. Sweatshirt weather again.
The water fountain in the container garden reminds me of a creek bubbling through the woods, a kind of cold-looking robin is out checking the ground for early-bird worms and the leaves on the maple are doing a wind-inspired dance. It’s another May day in NW Arkansas.
Do you like to copy and keep inspiring quotes that you find in various places? Some that are written and some that you hear?
One of the most fearless military leaders of all time was Joshua. This is one of my favorite quotes from the Book of Joshua: “Be strong and of a good courage.” (Joshua 1:6)
Then there was John Paul Jones in 1786. Remember him? “I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast for I intend to go in harm’s way.” Courageous.
“Never do a wrong thing to make a friend or to keep one.” Robert E. Lee.
“It is far better to be alone than to be in bad company.” George Washington.
“Always be a first rate version of yourself instead of a second rate version of somebody else.” Judy Garland.
Have you ever thought through a situation and then tried to condense your feelings into one short, memorable quote? Try it sometime. It’s hard but it’s fun. And sometimes it is surprising. Look at the characters you like to read about or write about. What have they said that finds a niche within your own heart?
Perhaps it’s this cold, crisp morning that has turned my thoughts to the wisdom of others. Sometimes a quote from many years ago seems very appropriate to me today.
