What a Muddle

In the light of the many disturbing events of the past couple of weeks, it’s hard to know what to write. I have strongly-held convictions and I’m sure you do too. I’m not into arguments because nobody’s mind was ever changed by arguing. However, I don’t know how many minds are changed by being presented with the facts, either. Sadly, opinions often hinge on our emotions and what we read from some other person’s viewpoint.

Let’s, please, learn to think for ourselves. When we read or see something, let’s check it out with more than one “fact checker” because those people, although they are supposed to be fair, often have a pre-determined viewpoint, believe it or not.

I’ve lived for quite a number of years and there’ve been fourteen Presidents during my time on earth, so far, and counting. Believe me, times have changed. Sometimes, the changes were gradual and almost imperceptible. Sometimes, they were sudden and upsetting. I’m not sure how many wars have come and gone. Oh, our leaders may not have called them wars, but when our troops are involved and young men and women lose their lives, they are wars!

I also remember peaceful times and you know what? I believe those peaceful times didn’t just happen. They were peaceful for a number of reasons. To me, one of those reasons was the recognition of right and wrong. We’ve lost sight of that lately. Twisting the truth, misspeaking, or lying are the same thing. They were once considered wrong and still should be. Instead, many times, they seem to be justified by whoever is putting them forth.

We are bombarded with news. We can’t escape it. Let’s, please, learn that videos and interviews can be edited and presented in far different form than original content. Let’s watch for catch phrases that don’t mean a thing, and realize that if an untruth is repeated often enough, the refrain is taken up by others, and becomes a false belief.

We are living in a dangerous time. What was once considered wrong is now justified. What I was taught and still believe to be wrong is thought of as right and right is considered to be old-hat and wrong. But, I remember a time when leaders were respected and when people disagreed without being violent. I remember a time when our foundation was solid and our framework was strong. And, let me tell you, I do miss that time.

  1. Well said. It’s hard to know the truth about what people say these days unless you hear when they’re first speaking. Our country is in a perilous position. We can only pray that the proper people will be voted in to straighten it out.

  2. No one could argue with you on this! It is sad to have seen the standards of integrity and honesty fall so far in a lifetime. Let us hope the pendulum will swing back and we’ll learn from this period. And remember to love all of God’s creation and children.

    • Thanks for writing, Kimberly. Yes, it’d be nice if we all could take lessons of the past and apply them to present day but that seems to be lacking at times.
