Welcome to a Wet, Soggy World

Welcome to a Wet, Soggy World

The picture of the mother robin and babies isn’t mine, but it might as well be. The nest is on a brick ledge like mine and the mama and her babies look exactly like the ones here at my house. The babies have hatched! The weeks of sitting on those eggs and keeping them warm through rain, wind, and the noise of the air conditioner have paid off for the patient mother. Welcome to a wet, soggy world, Larry, Moe, and Curly Robin.

Sure enough, the deck is wet this morning. Evidently, more rain fell during the night. All over, rivers and lakes are breaking records for the amount of water they’re holding. Two runaway barges hit the Webbers Falls Lock and Dam but they only did minimal damage. Thank goodness!

The Batfish, a seventy-seven year old submarine, dry-docked in a War Memorial park outside of Muskogee, Oklahoma, is floating again, brought to the surface by the flooded Arkansas River.

Major flooding along the Arkansas River is happening in Oklahoma and Arkansas. Homes are being inundated. And, it isn’t only the Arkansas River. Other rivers, creeks, lakes are invading homes and farmlands, displacing people and causing many, many problems and heartaches.

But, in the midst of all this calamity and suffering, the cycle of nature continues. Birds build nests, patiently wait, and a new generation of robins emerges. Life continues.
