In the Wee, Small Hours of the Morning

Do you ever wake up in the wee, small hours of the morning, and find thoughts running through your head that wouldn’t be there any other time of the day? It’s as if in the busyness of daylight hours, my mind is full of the activities or worries or demands of the day, but in those wakeful moments before sunrise, sometimes a thought surfaces that would not otherwise make it into my consciousness.

I try not to worry about the state of our Nation but in those quiet, early morning moments, comes the realization that our only hope is a return to our roots: faith in God, the God of our fathers, and standing firmly on biblical truths. Everything else is shifting sand. Many “Yes, buts” or “What ifs” clamor for attention, but it boils down to what Jesus said, We must come to Him as little children. Now, a child is trusting and it’s easy for a youngster to believe. A little child has faith. So must we.

Did you see the video of the three-year old whose parents were teaching him to sing The Star Spangled Banner? What a wonderful thing to see and hear! Are we teaching our children the history of this great country? I heard on a news program that many children don’t know that George Washington was our first President, nor can they name the vice-president of the United States. What are children being taught? Where are the parents’ priorities?

Anyway, not to be fatalistic, let me say there are hopeful signs too. We are, at least, aware of the lack and awareness is the first step in correcting an error. Faith, hope, and charity, but the greatest of these is charity, the Bible says. Love of God, for each other, for our country, gives hope in those wee, small hours of the morning. And faith? Well, faith can move mountains!
