Weather Lore and the Gift of Books

Weather Lore and the Gift of Books

Interesting weather lore from Farmer’s Almanac: If there be ice in November that will bear a duck, there will be nothing thereafter but sleet and muck.

Some of my friends just to the north are having snow already. And, we may see a few flakes today or Monday. It’s three degrees above freezing this morning, but hey! We aren’t quite halfway into November, so who knows? A duck might be able to walk on ice before the month is out.

Northwest Arkansas is blessed with a bit of country. There’ll be housing developments, stores, then all of a sudden, there’s a pasture and a pond with cattle and ducks and geese. I love it! And, I hope these oases never leave us, but stay to remind us of what the area once was. Some of the ponds are spring-fed and never run dry–never even get low in times of drought. Water is a priceless gift from God. We should take it seriously and not let progress encroach upon it. To my way of thinking, it just may be a sin to fill in a good well or a spring or a creek or pond. And, believe me, a filled-in creek is not a good place to build, even if it’s filled in quite well.

That’s my sermon for the day. Not that I intend to preach, but I am passionate about nature. Although we can’t stop progress, as I’ve heard many times, it would seem to me that progress should have a healthy respect for nature.

Some of my favorite children’s books deal with nature–the Thornton W. Burgess books, The Four Puppies, A Turkey for Thanksgiving, Thunder Cake, Snowbound by John Greenleaf Whittier, many of the Little Golden Books. A friend and I were talking yesterday about children’s books. She was asking me the titles of some of my favorites. She said she’s in her tenth childhood and is enjoying those books. Well, so do I. I’ve seen how generations of children love them and give them a head start into reading. And, I love them too.

Do you have your Christmas shopping all finished? Should I even mention it? Now is a good time to start, I keep reminding myself. Procrastination never helps anything, but it is one of my many faults. And, what could be better than a gift of books? Books bring joy all year long. And, a good story lasts forever.
