“We the people.” So begins our United States Constitution. This is the day we celebrate that document which is the basis of our Republic. It was written in 1787 and ratified in 1788. It has served us well since 1789 and proclaims that the government exists to serve the people; not the people to serve the government. We should be familiar with it and be grateful for the men who wrote it who were, in my opinion, inspired by God.
I’m afraid we take our freedom for granted because we’ve always been a free Nation. People who have lived under tyrants in other nations and who fled those countries to become citizens of the United States have a better understanding of how vital freedom is. Our Founders valued freedom because they too had fled an oppressive king.
I am grateful to be an American. I am not ashamed to say I love this country and the precepts that have made us great. We are free, not because the government gives us freedom but because our freedom and the right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness comes from God.
And that’s the way I see it, on the day of our Lord, September 17, 2015, Constitution Day.
