Waxing and Waning

Waxing and Waning

Last night, I saw parts of old television programs starring Tennessee Ernie Ford. I do believe that a person has to have attained a certain number of years before he/she can remember Tennessee Ernie. The program last night showed the first Tennessee Ernie TV programs, in black and white. Yet, I remember being mesmerized by those images and most of all by his wonderful, deep voice. I noticed that none of the singers did any yelling. The back ground music was not over powering and they didn’t require music videos to have an interesting show. It was just talented people singing to entertain the folks, no political messages, no innuendos.

In the long-ago days when this television show and similar ones were popular, it is my considered opinion that the world was a different place. We may not have been sophisticated, but sometimes sophistication comes with a lot of unpleasant baggage.

Tennessee Ernie’s shows would be considered old-fashioned now and I guess they are. But then, in many respects, so am I. So are a lot of people. We unsophisticated vintage people sometimes feel a bit uncomfortable in this highly technological world, this up-to-date, fast-paced, bewildering world.

Then, I started thinking about not only television shows and movies that are out-dated, but words that I don’t hear much any more, but would like to hear a lot more of and see lived out, words like discretion, integrity, valor.

My brother and I were talking the other day (sometimes my brothers and I take on the mysteries of the world and search for solutions) and he said that most of life’s problems would be eliminated if everyone followed the Golden Rule. I agreed. In this world of waxing sophistication and waning integrity, I think treating others, no matter their income level or background, as we would like to be treated would go a long way toward promoting peace and joy. It’s worth considering.
