Are you rich in memories of warm moments? We may not be wealthy in terms of money or assets, but those comforting pictures of things past are of far greater value, to my way of thinking. The sound of Dad building a fire early of a winter morning while I was just waking up always gave me a secure feeling. Maybe it was knowing that my parents were awake and I was safe.
Then, there was the sound of Mom whistling as she went about daily chores. I don’t remember any particular tunes and she whistled softly, almost under her breath, but that whistle meant she was happy and all was right with my world.
One of the most satisfying memories of my childhood was watching Dad at milking time in the barn as he sat on a milking stool by a jersey cow and directed two warm streams of milk into a stainless steel bucket, the foam rising up and the sound changing from a thin swish into a rich, sudsy swoosh as the bucket filled.
Much, much later when my son was a teenager, the sight of his car’s headlights coming up our long driveway late at night was a welcome sight. It meant he was home and safe and I could go to sleep.
Then, there were those times of rocking my grandchildren to sleep. Nothing can beat the feeling of love and contentment that comes from holding a warm, sleeping child in my arms.
Memories–these are times that can’t be bought for any amount of money, moments that comfort and cause a warm glow in my heart and the knowledge that I’m rich beyond imagination.
