When you listen to the news, do you ever ask, “Why?” That’s a favorite word for young children whose curiosity leads them to learn. Sometimes, as adults, our curiosity is dulled and we tend to accept events or happenings without asking that all-important question. It shouldn’t be that way. Without curiosity and the urge to know the truth, much of life’s excitement, eagerness, and veracity is gone. We let someone else do the thinking for us. Not good! Questioning is good!
For example, on this day in 1751, a man named James Madison was born. Why should we know who he was and what he accomplished?
Yesterday’s Presidential primary races yielded some important results. I’m always interested in how voters answer the exit questions, especially why they voted for their candidate. The answer, “My grandpa would roll over in his grave if I voted___” is seldom heard. Wouldn’t it be a shame if the next President was elected because people had always voted a certain ticket and didn’t want to change a tradition? Some of the “why” answers are thoughtful and are a window into what people are thinking. The important part is that they are thinking and are not satisfied with the status quo. Interesting.
Leaving that and going on to the weather, which, I admit, is a pretty big leap. The Farmer’s Almanac mentioned the possibility of Easter snow for the south central part of the United States. If I’m not mistaken, that includes us. What? Why? Could it be?
Spring flowers are peeking up from among the grass and fall leaves. Of all the flowers, these first ones are to me among the most beautiful. Buttercups, wild violets, bluets, all are eager to raise their heads and take a look at the big world.
As my camera captured images of these tiny beauties, I could almost hear, “Butterflies all flutter up to kiss each little buttercup at dawning.” (Carolina in the Morning)
I’m sure there are scientific answers to why the miracle of spring happens each year but I really like this answer: God planned it that way.
With St. Patrick’s Day just around the corner, tomorrow, in fact, I’ll leave you with one of my favorite Irish blessings. Remember we Irish have a unique sense of humor!
May those who love us, love us.
And those who don’t love us , may God turn their hearts.
And, if He doesn’t turn their hearts, may He turn their ankles
So that we will know them by their limping.
