Out on the freshly mowed lawn, two squirrels are getting their plans made for the day. Suddenly, one bounds, I mean really long leaps, toward the pin oak tree in the yard. The other scampers in the opposite direction and shinnies up the maple. Did they have a disagreement? Did they decide upon a parting of the ways?
My brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Linda, came for a visit yesterday. It was a fun day. When one is with family or friends, even the summertime heat doesn’t seem so oppressive and a hamburger and Coke become a feast. It’s good to talk with home folk. Yesterday I got an actual book in the actual mailbox from Georgia. It had pictures and information on the early days and my brother and I found our ancestors’ names mentioned several times. Really neat. Interesting stuff. I like to imagine what my family’s life was like during the Civil War, before and after. Not that I enjoy reading about their hardships and deprivations. No, I don’t enjoy that but it’s good to know that although they faced tough times, they came through. They loved books. They loved music. They had the Lord and they had each other. That should encourage and inspire even the most jaded of us.
So this morning, I enjoy my first cup of coffee and consider the past, present, and future. Brand new opportunities, long-held hopes and dreams. It’s going to be a good day.
