To all you priceless antiques out there, congratulations! Do you know your own hidden value? You areĀ beautiful, unique, and I salute you! To all you who have walked a good many miles down the road of life–a lovely, sunny, smooth road in spots and as rocky, dark, and treacherous as it could get in others–you’ve come through a lot and you’re still smiling.
Yesterday, as I walked into church, the first person I met was Jan. Jan walked with a cane, her spine was crooked, and she took small steps. I stopped to talk. She had fallen. She had broken two ribs and every breath she took was painful, but she had gotten up, put on her make up (Jan is a lovely woman) and had come to church. That took a lot of courage.
Inside the Sunday School room, I met more gracious, one-of-a-kind people–the man who had had a brush with death in the form of a heart attack, but was back making sure the coffee pot was going, greeting everyone with a smile, the woman who had had a pacemaker, others who had gone through traumas, losses, dark times and hard times, but there they were, dwelling not on their own ills and how they felt, but just grateful, rejoicing, thinking of others, and praising the Lord for life.
You, priceless antique, are like no other. You have inherent value just as we all do, young or old, but we older ones have weathered many storms. We are made of stern stuff. We’ve been buffeted, tossed about, but we’ve also seen a lot of good, beautiful, priceless times. We’ve loved and been loved. We’ve reached out to help others and many others have reached out to help us. We may not be perfect; in fact, we may be a little shop-worn, but if you look closely, you’ll see that we’re made of pretty good stuff.
All antiques have a particular aura or sheen. A few knicks, bumps, scratches and imperfections increase value. It’s called provenance. Each one is unique, irreplaceable and that’s what makes us valuable. Rejoice!
