I wonder if we realize the influence music has on each of our lives. When I hear the stirring first notes of My Own True Love, I instantly picture Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind. Each movie or TV show has its theme song and those opening notes tell us where we’re going.
I have a musical library as well as a collection of fiction and non-fiction books. Sometimes, I get out my old Reader’s Digest Songbooks and travel through the years by way of playing the piano. Yesterday, I played several, including I Can’t Begin to Tell You, from a 1945 musical. That song stayed with me all day and is still running through my consciousness this morning.
Many years ago (we won’t go into just how many) my mother, determined lady that she was, decided that since I enjoyed playing the piano, I should take piano lessons. My first teacher was a stern Englishman, Mr. Stone. My first book was Folk Songs and Famous Pictures by Mary Bacon Mason. It looks kind of beat up, but take into consideration that it’s almost as old as I am! I love that book. I was overjoyed to find it still listed on Amazon. Lovely, classical tunes and words by famous poets.
Music is and has always been such a big part of my life, that I’ve even tried writing a bit of my own. I doubt that it’ll ever make anyone’s top ten list or become the theme for a movie, but it’s mine.
Music is something that we pretty much take for granted. It is ingrained in our very souls and surely must have been included by our Creator as essential to our survival. I’ve even heard that it influences young people far more than current laws or popular mores. It’s fun to think about what tunes go with of us throughout the day. Like the movies, we each have a theme song.
