Those small, everyday things are the things that matter most. As we go through life, we dream of fame or fortune, we reach toward high goals and that is fine. If we didn’t have goals, we wouldn’t have anything to work toward, but as worthy and lofty as they are, it’s the small, everyday things that make the difference.
It all starts with our thoughts. If we could visualize ourselves in somebody else’s shoes and think how they might feel in certain situations, that would be a starting point. It’s really very simple. Instead of a critical thought, substitute it for a kind one. Think, “If that were me, what would I like to hear? Would it be a criticism, a derogatory statement, or something positive?” Proceed from there.
It seems to me that every last person on earth labors under a weight of negatives. Worries, responsibilities, big decisions, regrets–they are all there. Why should anyone want to add to another person’s load? Perhaps we can’t do much to solve the problems of others, but we can lighten the burden just a bit. A kind word, a positive statement, a compliment; even asking someone’s opinion are all little kindnesses.
Think about the people who mean the most to you. Why are they high on your esteem list? Is it because they are witty or knowledgeable or rich and powerful? Or, do they mean a lot to you because of the way they make you feel, because they bring out the best in you, or brighten your day in some way? We all have the ability to be that kind of person and it doesn’t cost a thing!
