Many of us have been experiencing rain, rain, and more rain. And, flooding. Flood records are being broken as creeks and rivers overflow and dams are strained to capacity. What a wet month!
A few years ago, when I was writing the fourth Darcy and Flora cozy, Grave Heritage, Tahlequah experienced the wettest July in history. Usually, July is fairly dry and hot. Not that particular July; it was wet! But, it served as an inspiration for the background of Grave Heritage. Once More, Darcy Campbell and her mother, Flora Tucker, were battling evil and in a considerable amount of danger. To make matters worse, the very elements seem to conspire against these two with floods and raging rivers.
Trotting to the front porch, I could hardly believe the scene in front of me. Lee Creek, our pleasant, clear little stream, was quiet no longer. Its muddy waters foamed and tossed. Over-running its banks, it surged against the lower part of the yard, lapping hungrily at the grass. Only a few more inches would put it over the bridge. No longer a pleasant accompaniment to the sounds of nature, it thundered like a hundred runaway horses.
Inspiration is everywhere for a writer–in happenings, in conversations, in news stories, and even in the weather!
