A branch on the crepe myrtle just outside my window is swaying. What is making it move? It isn’t the wind. The breeze is still; all the other branches are still. It’s a mystery! (I think I know the answer–a squirrel, but since I didn’t glimpse him, I’ll just keep the mystery.)
Mysteries are on my mind this morning. I’m reading, for the fourth time (yes, it’s at least the fourth time) Mary Roberts Rinehart’s superb book, The Red Lamp. Yesterday afternoon while rain poured and sloshed outside and thunder crashed, I was deep in the puzzle surrounding the strange goings on the property of William Porter, college professor. The book is good in any kind of weather, but is especially effective during a storm.
If I might confess to you, I enjoy Rinehart’s books far more than Agatha Christie’s. After I finish The Red Lamp, I’ll probably re-read another of her books.
No mystery about what I’m having for breakfast this morning–baked oatmeal. I woke up hungry and that appealed to my imagination. It’s easy to put together: two eggs, milk, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, brown sugar, chopped up apple. I made two pansful. In the second pan, I added raisins and nuts but Nathan prefers just the apple. Sara and I like it with the added ingredients.
The crepe myrtle is still, the other trees are still, the coffee is hot and strong and the oatmeal is baked and ready. I hope your day is a happy one and if you should encounter any mysteries at all, may they be of the cozy variety.
