The “Ever After”

I read a lot and a lot of what I read are cozy mysteries. I finished one a couple of days ago and enjoyed it thoroughly. The conversation sparkled. The protagonist was likable and the plot was not the usual one but it was intriguing. I liked this book so well that I decided to read its sequel. Oh, my! I’ve read a few pages and that’s all I plan to read. What a downer. Was this book written by the same author? It was, I feel sure, but the writer must have been in a dismal mood and it translated itself onto her manuscript.

The first book had ended on a high note. Questions were resolved and the culprit was discovered. But, the second book undid all that sunlight and joy. One of the main characters was killed off and it went downhill from there. I liked that person who was killed in the second book! He was believable and real-sounding. It was as if the writer built up to a great finished and then, poof! It disappeared.

Anyway, perhaps you would read the second book and enjoy it. Maybe I just don’t like to read a book that begins with so much sadness. I do like happy endings but I don’t think this book could end happily at all. Or, is it just my way of looking at it?
