The Conclusion of the Drama of the Hurt Foot

The Conclusion of the Drama of the Hurt Foot

At long last, the three-week injured foot challenge has ended happily! Yesterday, Nathan and I took Nemo back to his doctor for the stitches to be removed from his foot. If you’ll remember, he had a small growth on his foot. He was sedated, the growth removed, the incision sewed up, but that was only the beginning.

Then came the continuing drama of bandage, plastic cone, stubborn Nemo. I don’t blame him for hating the cone. It was obnoxious. It limited his vision to tunnel, it banged against doors and me, and it was hot! However, Nemo, being the intrepid little fellow that he is, did not despair. He found that, not only could he bend the cone at the bottom to eat and drink, he could also bend it so he could chew on his bandage. Which he did. Off came that carefully wrapped dressing!

So, it was back to the vet and another carefully wrapped dressing. But, it didn’t take long for that to lie on the floor too. Only one thing to do, the vet told me, he has to wear a bigger cone. So, looking much like a plastic sun bonnet, minus the prettiness, he wore a bigger cone and this one really banged into things! And, I had to take it off so he could eat and drink, then put it on again. Since he wouldn’t let a bandage stay on, he had to wear a plastic baggie on his foot before going outside. Baggie was held on by a rubber band. But, the rubber band was tight, so as soon as he came back indoors, that must come off so circulation wouldn’t be impaired.

We had a struggle. But, through it all, Nemo wagged his tail, smiled appreciatively, and ducked his head in embarrassment after chewing where he wasn’t supposed to (his foot). But, hallelujah! Yesterday, it came to and end and happily so. His foot is doing great. Nothing was malignant, and before too long, he can go to his groomer and be bathed and trimmed. It’s a happy day for the whole household!
