It never fails…when I sit down to a piece of cake, I always remember that, according to Frog and Toad, this will cure anything. It’s a comforting thought.
I’m grateful for being steeped in children’s literature and grateful for a mother who loved reading as much as I did. When I was a youngster, Understood Betsy was a favorite book and from it, I learned a lesson that has stayed with me all my life: my mistakes and wrong choices are not the end of the world. The old mountain is going to be standing in the same place, immoveable and steadfast a hundred years from now, whether I misspell “stomach” or not. (I actually did misspell this in a county spelling bee when I was twelve. But who knew it wasn’t spelled stomack? I didn’t.) This lesson came through loud and clear when Betsy thought the world would end because she misspelled a word in a spelling contest.
Unfailingly, each change of season, The Four Puppies come to mind and their bewilderment with seasons’ changing. Then, the wise old squirrel in the hickory tree told them that the seasons are like a big wheel turning around and around, and in each season, there was something to enjoy.
Sometimes I take myself too seriously and I’m sure most of us do. At such times, I like to remember that things will change and are not nearly as dark as I imagine they are. It’s good, then, to sit down with a piece of cake and a cup of tea, and have full confidence that everything is going to come round right again.
