A Tale of a Tail

A Tale of a Tail

There are tails and then there are other tails. A few days ago, I looked out my front room window on the world and saw a strange sight. Plenty of squirrels live in the neighborhood and seeing them is not uncommon; not seeing them would be uncommon because those cute little pesky rodents are all over the place. This squirrel was different because of his tail. He had the longest squirrel tail I had ever seen. It was stretched out behind him, not curved in a pleasing S over his back. Why? If he had placed it across his back, would it have hung down over his eyes and obscured his vision? Hmm. A real-life mystery. If posterior appendages are a matter of pride in the squirrel world, this particular varmint must be bursting with vanity.

Say! I just thought of a possible reason for the long tail and it has to do with weather lore. Does a particularly long tail on a squirrel mean we are to have a hard winter? I’ve always suspected the furry tails were used to wrap around their owners for warmth, but then, I’m just guessing.

Speaking of mysteries, I’ll have to check in with Darcy and Flora this morning. Copies of Grave Shift are in the hands of many people around the world and I’m hoping the proud owners are having a good read. If you haven’t yet gotten your copy, it’s still only $2.99 on Amazon. And the third Darcy/Flora mystery will hopefully be hot off the press soon.
