Taking Hope

A new year is waiting to make its appearance tomorrow. As we look at 2025, I think an important word is “hope.” We all hope for a better year in every aspect of life.

Here in the South, we can’t start the New Year without those all-important black-eyed peas.  That particular practice goes back to the Civil War when northern soldiers made sure to destroy everything edible that Southerners might eat. About the only thing left in some instances was black-eyed peas.

There are also a few other ideas that, although they may not work, are fun to know: For instance, don’t forget when you get out of bed January 1, put your right foot on the floor before the left. This insures getting started off on the right foot. If you eat anything circular, such as doughnuts or bagels, that’s a good thing too although I’m not sure why.

Be sure to leave out any form of fear when you think about what to take into the New Year. The Bible tells us to hang onto hope. Jeremiah 29:11 and Romans 15:13 are encouragers.

The road into the new year starts tomorrow. As you travel it, don’t forget to take hope along with you.
