Spring Storms and Other Things

Spring Storms and Other Things

Happy second day of Spring! Around 10:33 yesterday morning, winter packed its bags and crept out the back door while spring bustled in the front. Now, that’s not saying there won’t be some lingering traces of winter, because I’m sure she’ll linger, in some places more than in others, but at least the great, turning dial of the seasons points toward warmer weather.

Known as the vernal equinox, this is the time  day and night are most nearly equal. There’s usually a thunderstorm some time around this date. Is that because nature has a tough time shifting its seasonal gears and we hear the grumbling? Sure enough, we do have rain moving in this afternoon, with the possibility of thunderstorms.

Trees and grass are greening, the temperature is warm, and birds are building nests–all sure signs of spring. Some of the jonquils have already bloomed. Some were just starting when the cold snap got them, but I see little wildflowers are blooming and the periwinkles in the front are starting to open.

Yesterday, I heard a pretty little bright bird song. At first, I couldn’t locate the singer, but, finally, a purple finch flew onto a bird feeder. The weather was warm and maybe the finch didn’t really need extra seeds, but I filled the feeder anyway. Especially if it rains today, the birds may need an extra boost of energy to make it through the time they have to hide away from wind and heavy raindrops. Several finches came to join the snacking.  One of my favorite things about winter is watching the birds and it’s a happy pasttime in the spring too.
