Old Man Winter has not forgotten us! He remembered that with all the snow and cold he is dumping on New England, he certainly can’t forget us just a little farther south. And, lest we feel slighted and neglected, he turned his frigid attention on us today.
Yesterday was pretty cold all day and long about 8 o’clock, rain started. Dissatisfied with being in the liquid state, it soon became the frozen variety, laying down a nice undercoating of ice. Then, in order to give us a taste of yet another form of precipitation, snow began. And is currently falling.
Schools are closed and many in Arkansas are without power. That seems to be part and parcel of an ice storm–weighty lines that come down and people have to rely on blankets, fireplaces, or gas stoves. Let me encourage each of you who may be in that condition, please be extra careful with heating your home. Use care and don’t catch anything on fire that isn’t supposed to be one fire.
Anyway, cold as it is, it is still beautiful out. The children will enjoy a day at home, I’ll enjoy a day of writing, and we will take what Old Man Winter is giving. One of these days, it’ll all melt into spring.
Silence by Blanche Day Manos
A soft and downy, drowsy day,
The sky is furry, blurry gray,
No wind to blow the snow away
In patches.
The trees are draped with frozen lace,
The meadow is an arctic place,
And house and barn, with wintry grace,
Wear thatches.

Love your poem! Keep warm and stay off the roads.
Thanks, Sharon. I plan to do just that. In fact, the fireplace, numerous cups of coffee, and a good book sound mighty inviting!
