Sleepless Night

Chapter 3

Miss Georgia didn’t sleep well that night. It wasn’t the wind, although it did howl around the corner like a lost soul. It wasn’t actually Abigail, who slept on Miss Georgia’s sofa. It was the story Abigail brought with her, the ridiculous story about thinking maybe her house was haunted. Miss Georgia had no use for such outlandish beliefs, but it was plain to see that Abby was frightened.

Abby had always been a trifle excitable, even since girlhood days. She and Abby had been friends when they were children, and were close as they grew up. A rift occurred when Abby married a young man, Chase Parks, who Miss Georgia was more than a little in love with. But, as she looked back on it, it had worked out for the best.

Chase was an ambitious young man and he believed Abigail’s father could help him in his law career. Which, evidently, he did. Chase went on to become a successful prosecutor, sending more than one bank robber or murderer to the state penn or to pay the ultimate price.

Miss Georgia realized she wouldn’t have wanted to live with a man who made so many enemies, vile people who vowed vengeance on the man who prosecuted them. But, it didn’t seem to both either Chase or Abigail. Now, Chase was gone and Abby was alone in a too-large house.

Sighing, Miss Georgia turned over and bumped into Elmira. The little cat purred and snuggled closer.

“Do you feel like making a short trip, Elmira?” she whispered. “I’m not sure that I do, but I think it is necessary.”

Before going to bed, Miss Georgia had promised Abby that she’d return to her home with her the next day. Saturday was the day that James Stone made a weekly trip to town. Surely Abby and she could catch a ride back to town with him. She had promised Abigail she’d try to get to the bottom of the ghost story. It was either that or Miss Georgia would have a permanent guest because Abigail refused to go home alone.
