Out of these twenty days of December, two have been sunny. Guess what we have lurking around the corners of the house this morning, settling down over treetops, seeping into autumn’s leaves? Gray, wet, cold, impenetrable fog! Yet again. Where is the sun? Is it still up there?
Even Rudolph’s red nose would need several batteries to out-last all this weather. There’s one good thing about foggy, cold days–they make the house seem cozier and more inviting than ever. I’m sitting beside my lighted Christmas tree–a good start. Fireplace going, Christmas music, a light in every room, pretty soon the house will glow with cheeriness. I’m fighting back against the fog.
Don’t we do that spiritually speaking–fight back against the fog? When bad news, sickness, scary times threaten to overwhelm us, we look upward and inward for light and strength for the battle.
There’s another good thing about the fog–it’s a perfect time–let me reiterate perfect time to make friends with books, lots of books, preferably cozy mysteries. And, let me tell you, it is a good time to go to Levi, Oklahoma, and drop in on Flora and Darcy. Another mother and daughter sleuth team mystery is stirring in my mind, as well as a second Nettie mystery. Now, with heroines like that, intrepid, daring yet humble, brave but with common sense, curious but cautious, to keep me company, plus, of course the aforementioned fireplace, Christmas tree, lighted rooms, what do I care about the shadows lurking in the fog? They only spur me on to ask the questions, why are they there? Who are they really? And what must I do to dispel them?
