It’s hard to believe that this is the last day of September! Do you suppose time is really passing faster? Has the earth speeded up in its spinning? Sometimes, it seems that way.
The birds are becoming more active. Bluejays screech in the back yard and this morning, a small wren came to pay her respects, peering up at me from the deck railing. They seem to sense a change is coming. Summer’s warmth will soon be a thing of the past.
Insects and arachnids are restless too. I’m not sure where they are getting in, but four red wasps have found their way inside my house this week. My son also found a black widow spider, a big one, on my door facing.
Some of my flowers in the front yard have called it quits for the season and the Joe Pye weed’s cottony tufts have almost all blown away. The giant marigolds are still blooming and lighting up their area.
Leaves are dropping off maples and oaks but that may be due to dryness rather than the season. Hopefully, we’ll get rain soon. I was hoping Hurricane Helene would fling some water up this way, but alas! She did not. She did wreak havoc over much of the South, though, and my heart goes out to the many people whose homes have been washed away or who lost loved ones. A destructive hurricane and far-reaching.
So, September finishes quietly here, at least. The morning is still and crisp. Squirrels are jumping through the leaves and a bunch of robins have dropped in for drinks of water. As they flutter around the yard, I wonder if they are getting ready to fly South. But, this day is theirs and ours, and that in itself is a cause for celebration!
We could use some rain over here also. I keep saying at least we’re not in Florida or North Carolina these days.
Yes, we are very dry. I feel for those folks in N. Carolina, all the states that are affected by the Hurricane. They’ve lost an awfully lot.
