Sauntering Through Saturday

Sauntering Through Saturday

This morning, thoughts flit through my mind sort of like moths around a light bulb. It’s winter. It’s cold. A possibility of freezing rain is in the forecast and I’m wondering if that forecast will become a fact. Then, thoughts of mysteries, my own and those of other people. Yesterday, I finished reading Moonlight Can Be Murder yet again, just to see if I still like it. Is it egocentric to say I like that book? As I re-read, with a new heroine, the start of a new series, I wondered, Is it really a cozy? Those of you who have read the Darcy and Flora series, do you think they are cozies? Are they like other cozies you have read?

I’ve noticed there’s a difference in cozies. Some are light-hearted; some are not. Some are almost tongue-in-cheek; some are deadly serious. Moonlight Can Be Murder has all the hallmarks of a cozy–small town, friends who gather around, amateur woman sleuth, romantic interest, but oh, my goodness! It also has a shock or two. Is that normal?

What kind of books do you like to read? Especially, what do you look for in a cozy mystery? A couple of the cozy critters gave me their thoughts on the subject which I’ll put into an upcoming blog. It’s always interesting to know if other people look at a story the same way I do.

By the way, Darcy and Flora are doing well in Canada, thanks largely to a wonderful review by fellow author, Sharon Mierke. Check out amazon.ca. Thanks, Sharon.

This Saturday, which is starting with the temperature only about seven degrees above zero, and which may turn into a very wintry Sunday, is, after all, a winter day and a good reason to stay inside with one of my best friends, a book!

  1. You are welcome, Blanche. I am so happy for you. I sell NOTHING in Canada. Isn’t that ironic! Re: cozy mysteries. They do seem to vary but I think it’s the fact that nothing is graphic. There’s no graphic violence, no illicit sex, and no F words. Some are serious and others, humorous. You usually don’t have to worry about finding anything too offensive in cozy mysteries.
Well, that’s my take on it! Another cool cloudy day here but no snow or freezing rain.

I agree with your description of cozies, Sharon. I write the kind of story I like to read and I guess the fact is that I’m terribly old-fashioned. Just the way I was raised! When I see my mom in Heaven, I don’t want to have to apologize for what I’ve written! Your cozies are really neat! Any more cozies in the works, as well as historical fiction? We have freezing rain forecast for tomorrow! Today is very cold but at least, the sun is shining! Have fun today.

  2. What can I say, Blanche?! I have three works on the go – one Mabel and Flori, one Beryl Swallows and one historical fiction. Not sure when any will be ready for publishing though.

Congratulations, Sharon. I think the more books on Amazon, the better they all sell! I can’t wait to see what Mabel and Flori are up to this time. I’m thinking I may get at that Etta Bend book, actually two books into one, at least as an ebook. And, I’m still working on the Etta Devotional. I really want to finish and publish that one. Then, as I looked at Moonlight Can Be Murder, I saw many little plants that I can use in the next book, book Two.

  3. Actually, this is kind of funny because as you know, Mabel has decided to retire; however, there is a cold case she’s wondering about. And, of course, since Reg is retired too … well who knows what they will dig up! Guess we both were thinking alike.

Well, you know what they say about great minds! Yes, I understand ab out these characters we create. Sometimes they have minds of their own. I think Darcy and Flora have maybe retired but, those gals may decide something entirely different.
