The Return of the Owls and Other Stuff

The Return of the Owls and Other Stuff

Yesterday, I rummaged in the garage until I found a few of my fall decorations. One is a centerpiece I bought at a craft fair years ago. It is pretty with the candle in the center and fall leaves and such around. Through the years,it has grown a bit. 003Now, it includes some real-life acorns that I’ve found under oaks and glued onto the leaves, a gourd bumble bee I painted a few years ago, and a brown owl box Sara gave me after a fall had broken my hip. Inside that box was an owl necklace which I’ve worn since getting it. Last year, my niece Michelle Albrecht sent some owls she had fashioned from pinecones. (She also made the autumn table runner.) The centerpiece looked like a good home for those northern owls and they seem to be comfortable there, and have adapted to Arkansas weather. Well-adjusted owls.

This is Labor Day which means I’ll commemorate by mopping my floors. Why mop my floors on a day that celebrates the working man/woman? It is a symbol of great significance. It represents washing away the errors of the past year and the start of a brand-new autumn. I’m grateful that I’m able to move around under my own steam, and, besides, doesn’t it feel nice to walk barefoot on a clean floor? Clean floor, fresh start. new book coming out this month…lots of reasons to celebrate and all of them represented by mopping my floor. Do you believe that?

Completely off the subject of fall and Labor Day, did you happen to see William Shatner on television yesterday? There was a big Star Trek celebration in New York City. Captain Kirk has aged well! In no way does he look his eighty-five years. Could it be the $650 million he has amassed that acts as a vitamin? He too is an author, with several books to his credit. So, maybe it’s writing that keeps him young? Or maybe, inside, he is still the dashing, handsome young captain of the Star Ship Enterprise, going where no man has dared go before.

I catch the fragrance of toast with real Irish butter melting into it and feel the need of a glass of orange juice and a coffee re-fill. Mopping floors requires an energy booster and breakfast is a good way to start any day, especially Labor Day!
