Company Comin’

Company Comin’

This morning, maybe because Matt and Dawn were expecting company yesterday, I thought of how my dad and mom welcomed company a long time ago when I was a child. Company was special. (It still is, by the way.) We looked forward to visitors (well, Mom and Dad did. I was so shy that sometimes I would run and hide!) Visitors were welcomed with hugs or handshakes and, if it was one of my brothers home from the Navy, Mom welcomed them with tears. Hospitality was the word of the day. We may not have had much but what we had, we shared. If the company was unexpected and happened to land in our home before or at meal time, they were immediately invited to eat. If they had refused, we would have taken it as an affront. If we hadn’t offered, they would have been shocked. That’s the way it was in Oklahoma. Just wanted to share that with you. I was borrowing back a few of the olden days this morning. Maybe it’s because of a change of seasons, time passing. Maybe it’s because I am getting older? Hmm.

Anyway, a new season always fills me with hope and anticipation, akin to expecting visitors. There’s a feeling of change in the air, of learning new things, of stimulating conversations. But then, mornings are like that too. Another day filled with opportunity; old things left behind and reaching out for the new. The kind of feeling I get when there’s company comin’.
