I don’t know what Punxsutawney Phil is going to find when he sticks his head out of his burrow in Pennsylvania but Grundoon the Arkansas Groundhog will get rain on his furry little head. At least, right now at the present time, he will. Of course, it’s too early for the sun anyway so seeing his shadow is out of the question at the moment.
Much has been written about these furry little rodents who share the planet with us. Groundhogs, Woodchucks, Marmots and Whistle Pigs by Adele Richardson is just one of those books. An appealing children’s book is Groundhog Day! by Gail Gibbons.
I like groundhogs fine if they stay in their own homey environment, preferably along the river or way out in the woods by the creek. I don’t like them so well when they choose my environment and burrow under garages, make tunnels beneath buildings, and try to out-populate humans. But weather forecasters? I have absolutely zero faith in their prognosticating ability. We either will or we won’t have six more weeks of winter and I am of the humble opinion that we certainly will.
However, stories about them are good. I wonder if Darcy and Flora have groundhogs at their new home on Granny Grace’s acres? Could a groundhog possibly help solve a mystery?
