I had started to the store for a batch of groceries. Rain fell gently and the sun shone too. “Oh,” I thought. “This is perfect weather for a rainbow!” Glancing out of my car’s window to the west, I saw it, a lovely, large rainbow that looked like it arched over the whole town, north to south. This was too good a chance to pass up. I quickly made a couple of left turns, pulled back into my driveway, ran into the house, and got my camera. But, on looking for the rainbow, I saw it was hidden by trees. I drove slowly back along the way I had come until I got to a church parking lot. Pulling in, I took a picture of the rainbow through my car’s droplet-spattered front window. By that time, the bow had faded almost into obscurity.
My daughter-in-law Dawn, however, had much better luck. She and Sara snapped a picture while the rainbow was still at its brightest. In fact, Sara said there was a double rainbow. So, I’ve put both rainbow pictures up; mine, that you have to use your imagination to see, on the right side of the picture, and Dawn’s, which is a beautiful arch above the houses.
Every time I see a rainbow, I am reminded of what the Lord told Noah, “And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud; And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth” (Genesis 9:14-16).
And, again, “When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou has ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?” (Psalm 8:3-4).
I think everyone has need of hope and a rainbow inspires hope in my heart. Troubles and problems may abound, but God is still mindful of us. “The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms” (Deuteronomy 33:27).
