Prowling Through a Dark House

Prowling Through a Dark House

Sometimes sleep is a contest, a real honest to goodness struggle. Hard to come by. I doze off on the sofa, wake up and see it’s way past my bedtime, stagger back to bed and pop! My eyes are as wide open as an owl’s and I can no more go to sleep than I can fly. So, up once again, prowling through the house, flipping on the TV, flipping off the TV, settling down to read, drinking a cup of milk. Meanwhile, the clock keeps ticking.

Do you have the problem of ESS (Elusive Sleep Syndrome)? If you do, what keeps you up? Worries, being too tired to sleep, too much caffeine, anticipating a big day? Wondering how Darcy is going to get out of her current pickle? Jethro, by the way, isn’t bothered by sleepless nights and rather enjoys them as a reason to prowl.

Just as sure as I have a trip planned and know that I really need a restful night, guess what? I might be able to snatch a few hours sleep, but that’s it! The next morning, I have to depend on adrenalin and coffee to get me through.

Does anybody know a cure? What do you do when sleep is far away and so is the morning? And what are the reasons you can’t sleep? Does anybody else suffer from ESS or is it just me, your groggy cozy mystery writer? Write comments below. Please.

Words of Wisdom from Darcy and Flora’s cat, Jethro: The only valid excuse for staying awake all night is to finish an exciting cozy mystery

  1. I have it too. One of the things besides my health that keeps me up is when I am doing genealogy. My mind just won’t shut off when trying to find my elusive ancestors. I also can’t sleep in a bed due to health so it is hard when everything hurts to get comfortable in my recliner to sleep. On those nights I figure God has something to tell me so I pray and read my Bible. You are not alone dear friend. Trips keep me up too because I am excited to get going

  2. Thanks for sharing, Deb. Yes, prayer is certainly good for such times or any time, for that matter. There is a verse that goes something like I will both lie down and rest for you alone O Lord make me dwell in safety. My daughter in law framed that verse once for my husband.
