Yesterday was a picture perfect day if you like April storms, and the rain continues this morning. It’s chilly too–the temperature registers forty-eight degrees. Another fireplace day. According to a report I read, the Illinois River is supposed to reach well over sixteen feet and flood stage is eleven feet.
These pictures give a hint about how hard yesterday’s rain fell. It meant business; no April showers, just torrents of water, sloshing, bouncing, running in small rivers down the street.
My peonies and Iris could hardly raise their water-logged heads and seemed in danger of drowning, so between downpours, I ran out to rescue a few. They made a nice rainy day bouquet, sitting between some antique books from Fran.
Believe me, there’s only one way to deal with this kind of weather–a book, preferably a cozy mystery that has some extra shivers between its pages– a cozy fire (if you live in NWArkansas, you’ll need one) a cup of strong, hot coffee. Serenaded by falling rain and an occasional rumble of thunder, this wet weather day will become a comfort zone of imagination. Bring on the rain!
A Sudden Shower
There’s a scurry in the garden, there’s a rustle through the plants.
There’s a scamper, scoot and scuttle made by bustling bugs and ants.
The mushroom’s an umbrella for a lovely butterfly,
And the pumpkin vine’s a shelter for a cricket hopping by.
Then a rush of racing raindrops patter, splatter in the grasses,
While the hidden garden dwellers rest until the shower passes.
