Owls in the Attic

Owls in the Attic

Sitting here at my computer long before the sun comes up, my thoughts wander here and there, different places, people, times, both past and present. And I remember a friend I met only once in southern Oklahoma, just across the river from Texas. I remember her each time I look at my kitchen windowsill and see a small, brown bobble head dog that she gave me. Next to Nemo, he is the most agreeable critter in the house, with his head bobbing up and down each time I touch it.

This friend grew gourds. That’s how I got to know her. She was enthusiastic, lively, energetic, and didn’t fit into any mold. For one thing, a family of owls stayed in her attic but that was all right with her. They flew in and out through an attic opening and I think she kind of liked to hear their soft hoots and mutterings.

This is the last day of September and I watch it go with trepidation (a seldom-used word meaning, among other things, alarm).  I wonder what October will have in store. Not to be a Nervous Nellie, but sometimes I have a tendency to try to hang onto things; only thing is, I can’t really hang onto time. Anyway, I do look forward to October and frost and colored leaves and allergies leaving and mosquitoes going away.

My publisher sent another audition for The Cemetery Club, the audio book we are preparing. I wish I could send you a link but the excerpt is from a pivotal chapter which would give away the culprits and, shucks! That’s not what I want to do. Anyway, I do enjoy listening to these readings. I’ll play them for the Cozy Critiquers today and get their opinion.

As I said, my thoughts are scattered this morning. That’s probably a sign that I need one more cup of Folgers to sort of focus and plunge headlong into a brand-new day and I’ll do it without trepidation.

  1. I’m pretty sure that having owls in the attic is better than having bats in your belfry! 😉 Have a great day, Aunt Blanche!

  2. I agree. You have a great day too, dear niece.
