My friend and next door neighbor Peg and I often talk over the back fence that separates our two yards. It’s funny that we talk more this way than in each others’ houses sharing a cup of coffee. I was on my deck last week and I saw Peg about to go into her house and called out, “Wait! Don’t go in yet.” I had some things to discuss with her and that’s what we did–chatting and giggling, standing under my willow oak that shades both yards.
Today, I fear that it’s too wet to be chatting outdoors. We’ve had a spate of rain and more is forecast. So, I planted my herbs yesterday at just the right time to have them watered by nature. This was after a delicious Mother’s Day lunch prepared by my son and grandson. And, of course, rain precludes outdoor visiting and outdoor gardening so what is left to do? Why, read a mystery, of course, or better yet, continue writing my mysterious story of Miss Tootsie and the Mysteries of Hickory Ridge.
I also enjoy talking to my neighbor over the side fence in the backyard. We’ve done that more often than going into each other’s homes to talk.
It’s very nice to have a neighbor to chat with like that. You and I are lucky to have them.
