Have you ever been out among great, big, wild cats? Yesterday, my family and I made an excursion to Turpentine Creek, a wildlife refuge in NW Arkansas. I hope you click on the link to learn more about this place. It’s a home for abandoned, abused, and neglected wild animals, especially big cats. There are a few other species, including bears.
This is a marvelous place, tucked back among hills, steep ravines, creeks, lots of green grass and trees. I’m so glad it is there but sad that it is necessary. In Arkansas, it is unlawful to own a wild animal for a pet, but in many states, it isn’t. I wish it were unlawful in every state. Wild animals are just that–wild. They were never meant to be tamed and their wild heart, their instincts and habits will always be those of an animal whose native homes were far, far from what we call civilization.
Turpentine Creek is run by professionals who understand and enjoy the tigers, bears, bobcats, and others that they care for. There’s a thoroughly equipped veterinarian building for animals needing help. Special diets, toys, houses, and open spaces are a vital part of life for animals who have been ill-used by people. I was excited to see a movie star on our guided trolley car tour. This lion starred in the movie, Second Hand Lions.
It’s wonderful that some people are dedicated to changing laws, rescuing abused and abandoned wild animals, and are making a difference in how these animals are treated. It’s a worthwhile visit to Turpentine Creek and an eye opener to be out among those great, big cats and see their beauty and uniqueness up close.

LOVE those big cats! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for writing, Kimberly. I do too and so wish they could be back in their natural habitat with all the needs they have, that wouldn’t be possible now. They seem to be receiving excellent care.
