As I hear the horrendous stories of the floods in Texas and Oklahoma, I stand in awe of the human spirit, the strength of faith, and plain, raw courage. To me, courage is continuing on when you don’t want to, not the absence of fear but keeping on in spite of fear or defeat, putting the needs of others ahead of needs of my own.
Some people lost everything to merciless, roiling waters. I’m quite sure that many did not have flood insurance and where do you turn with no home, no car, no clothing or food? Worse, though, is the loss of loved ones; lives can never be replaced.
When I was a child, about eight years old, a house fire destroyed all our belongings. We were away from home at the time, so we still had our car, the clothes on our backs, the few things neighbors salvaged from the blaze, and that was about it. I’ll never forget the kindness of friends, neighbors, and complete strangers in trying to help us get back on our feet. However, we still had each other and we had God. Or rather, God had us.
Anyway, as I think back to that time and hear the amazing stories coming out of the flooded areas of Texas and Oklahoma, my thoughts go out to these survivors and my prayers go up to God. I ask for courage for them to keep on keeping on, to go forward and to have faith. Sometimes faith wavers in the face of great tragedy but faith is the thing that pulls us through. It is a lifeline to God.
