Old Man Winter

Yesterday,  it was fall. This morning, it’s winter. The brown leaves and dark trees are wet. I wonder if we had a first snowfall during the night but the temperature was so warm, it melted quickly into rain?

I remember walking home from the school bus when I was a child. The bus let my brother and me out at the start of our long driveway. We slogged through the snow, feet making squeaking sounds, hurrying to get to our house. I remember the relief at feeling the warmth of the living room, taking off coat and cap and hovering around the wood-burning stove.

Anyway, those are some of the memories. It’s nice to think about them. I didn’t feel deprived or put-upon. It was just life.  I wouldn’t want to return to those days, except for the people. Mom, Dad, my brothers and sister–I miss them as part of the old days.

  1. We put up with a lot in the old days. No dishwashers, color TVs, remote controls, Internet, cell phones. We never imagined any of that in our future.

    • No, we didn’t imagine it and because of that, we accepted what we had to do. Now, it would seem a hardship because we’ve gotten used to an easier way of life but then, it was just the normal day to day living.
