October and Fall
The Spider and the Fly
“Will you walk into my parlour?” said the Spider to the Fly,
‘Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy;
The way into my parlour is up a winding stair,
And I’ve a many curious things to show when you are there.”
“Oh no, no,” said the little Fly, “to ask me is in vain,
For who goes up your winding stair
-can ne’er come down again.”
As you know, Flora Tucker likes to cook. Her food is plain, country food for the soul and body. Today’s recipe is Flora’s Favorite Chocolate Pudding. It’s good for a rainy day, for a quick dessert, or just to warm the spirit along with the tummy.
2/3 C. sugar 2 egg yolksl/4 C. cocoa 2 Tablespoons real butter6 Tablespoons flour 1 tsp. vanillaPinch of salt 2 C. milkStir together sugar, cocoa, flour, and salt. Add milk a little at a time, stirring as you go. Beat eggs yolks a bit before adding them. Add butter. Cook over a medium heat, stirring constantly. (If you don’t stir, it scorches.) Bring to a boil and continue stirring until the mixture thickens to pudding consistency. Remove from heat and add vanilla. Pour into bowls and chill it or eat it warm.
