November Morning

It is really looking like fall this morning. The maples in front and back yards are almost bare of leaves. Those that are left are a pale orange against the backdrop of dark limbs. The yard is carpeted in those leaves and this morning, they are soggy. Yes! We’ve had more much-needed, wonderful rain. I’m thankful.

This is the first day of being back on Central Standard Time. Nice of mornings, not so nice when darkness closes in earlier. May we leave time just as it is and not spring ahead next year? Does anybody really believe that cutting one end off the blanket and sewing it on the other end makes the blanket longer?

A squirrel skitters across wet leaves and shinnies up the maple. He’s holding something in his tiny paws, and chewing furiously. Did he bring an acorn with him to eat while he sits on his favorite perch? That attended to, he spies a friend on the higher branches and effortlessly jumps up to join him.

It’s nice to glimpse a small bit of nature–going along as it has for ages, oblivious of the troubles and turmoil of mankind. It’s nice to take a deep breath and be grateful–for the rain, the leaves, the squirrels, and this autumn day.
