The driveway is long. It winds around cottonwoods, oaks, and elms on its way up the hill. A wooden bridge spans Joe Creek, making a pleasant rattle as car tires meet wood planks.
At the end of the driveway the house rises from a grassy hill, surrounded by trees and wildflowers. Although it is large, having two stories, you can’t really see the second story from the front because the shake roof slopes steeply and the upstairs windows are all in the back. Morning light slips into those windows, awakening sleeping people, and invites them into a new day.
Two fireplaces, one at the north end, one at the south end of the house whisper of cozy nights around a fire, a good place to sit and talk through the latest mysterious happenings. Jethro likes one hearth as well as the other.
A porch wraps around the entire house, deep and welcoming. It is complete with a porch swing and wicker furniture, a good place to sit with friends and watch the sun set over western hills.
It’s Darcy and Flora’s new house, built on Granny Grace’s acres, on her old home place. It figures largely in the fourth Darcy and Flora cozy mystery. I hope you like it as well as I do.

Sounds wonderful!
Thanks, Sharon. It’s a pretty neat place to be.
Sounds great! When do we start building?
Just any time. Wait’ll you see the upstairs!
Can’t wait. Sounds great!
It fits right into the landscape of trees, hills, hollow, and creek.
