No Room for Regrets or Recriminations

No Room for Regrets or Recriminations

The leaves are falling from the trees, in a hurry to leave their spring and summer home and take up residence on the ground. At this time of year, it is easy to let melancholy thoughts creep in. Warm weather with its flowers and activities is past, over and done with! So, like the puppies in the children’s book, I feel like trying to put the leaves back on the trees and saying, “No, don’t go yet.”

But, there’s something else in the air: an expectation of things to come, an energy and eagerness as I look forward to a new season. Why is it that we look back with regret or recriminations, not only at the past season but at our past days and years? Why do we always remember the words or deeds we shouldn’t have said or done, and the things we should have done but didn’t? Why do sadness and regrets and recriminations go hand in hand with looking back? I say, Down with regrets and recriminations! Up with gratitude for what has gone by and the joy of looking forward to a new day.

Our preacher, a few years ago, preached a wonderful sermon on not looking back. I have that sermon on CD and from time to time, I re-play it. It never fails to encourage me.

Someone else said that we don’t need to be told of the wrongs we’ve done or the rights we haven’t done. We already know them. We need to be encouraged and accepted and infused with that wonderful little spark called Hope. I believe that.

Speaking of things past and things coming, the first Saturday in December is the date for the Victorian Christmas at the Thompson House in Tahlequah. I’ve been invited, once again, to bring my cozy mystery books to the celebration. Yesterday, I finished getting them ready, signing each one, attaching a tag with the name of the books, the price, and my seller’s number. They are all stacked in my owl tote bag and are ready to hit the road for my home town.

How many will sell? I’ve no idea, but some will. That’s enough, to know that Darcy, Flora, and Ned will be sitting in the homes of people who enjoy a cozy mystery. Now, that’s a reason for looking forward and celebrating!
