So, did I see a squirrel murder a baby robin yesterday, or did I not? I glanced out of my window and saw a squirrel running erratically across my neighbor’s lawn, sort of zig-zagging. I could see the grass move in front of him, so it looked like the squirrel was chasing something on the ground. Then, the chase ended and the squirrel hunched over his prey and stayed there, munching, I assume. What did it kill? Two adult robins were hopping near-by, looking on. So, I rather believe their baby was the squirrel’s victim.
I know that squirrels rob bird nests, but I’d never seen one chase down a flightless bird before. Or, is that what I saw? Since the grass hid the small object, I’ll never know for sure, but I have my suspicions. Birds have a tough time. First of all, insecticides kill their food, then there are cats and dogs, storms that blow them from their nests, and squirrels. We’d have a pretty tough life ourselves, if we didn’t have birds to share it with.
