The dictionary defines “mother” as the female parent but mothers are so much more than that! Being a mother is the most rewarding, vital job in the world. Not only is it a job; it is a blessing. The first face a newborn sees is his mother’s. She is the one he first turns to for comfort and for his very life. No man-made position can hold a candle to it for its importance.
On this special day, as well as all the other days of the year, my mom is in my thoughts. She was my rock, my confidante, and my best friend. I could count on Mom to always have time to listen and I can’t remember her ever telling me she was busy and didn’t have time to talk. She loved me as she loved all her children and grandchildren. I took her love for granted because I had never known anything else. Even though she is gone now, the things she taught me and the love she showered on me will always be with me.
My mother showed me, by example, how to be a mom to my son. I’ve always tried to live up to her standards of motherhood and been blessed by doing so. My husband and I agreed that becoming parents was the best thing we ever did. Being a mom is like getting a Christmas present every day of the year. There is no other joy like it. Mixed in with the joy are worries and challenges, fatigue and sleepless nights, a lot of prayers, a few tears but far outshining those are the smiles and the laughter. My son is the biggest joy of my life, and through him, I’ve gained the additional delights of a lovely daughter-in-law and two terrific grandchildren.
Yesterday, Matt brought me a bouquet of pretty flowers and a box of chocolates but, you know what was even better? His presence. It is amazing to me how seeing my child walk in the door is an instant pepper-upper. In case you haven’t guessed, I love being a mom, mother-in-law and grandma. I also love being the daughter of an amazing mother. The Lord has blessed me indeed.
