Meandering Past Houses in the Fog

The fog sinks lower this morning, quietly seeping through treetops and around the roofs of houses. We had rain last night, I’m happy to say, and I guess the fog must be the result of warm and cool air colliding. Nemo lies snoozing near the Christmas tree. It’s the start of a quiet, slow morning.

Believe it or not, this Friday we have a possibility of rain or snow. It has been a long time since I’ve seen snow. That should make the day seem a bit more Christmas-y.

I stayed up late last night reading Fixing to Die by Miranda James. She is one of my favorite cozy mystery authors. The story centers around an antebellum house in Natchez. I like stories having to do with old houses.

My fascination with houses that have survived for a century or more has led me to writing cozies about houses. The old farmhouse of the Darcy and Flora mother/daughter sleuth series, was more than a hundred years old. Of course, now they are living in a new house on Granny Grace’s land.

Ned McNeil inherited a lovely Victorian house and the two mysteries she solved are centered around that house. I modeled it after the Thompson House in Tahlequah. I’ve always loved that house and felt a special kinship with it because I wrote a story about it for The Daily Press when it was in a sad, sad condition and about to be demolished. I like to think that my story might have helped bring the house to the attention of civic-minded people who set about raising money to restore it. Now, it’s a beautiful Queen Anne, looking much as it did when Dr. Joseph Thompson built it more than 120 years ago.

So, how did fog lead me into a discussion of houses? Must be because it’s nestling down over my neighbors’ houses, making them look dim and ghostly, and stirring my imagination. Houses are interesting because of the people who lived in them and the mark they leave on history. However small or large that mark is, we all leave one. Whether it’s good, bad, outstanding, or indifferent depends upon a lot of things. House stories really do go better with fog.
